"WELCOME" Plaque

by Corliss Decker

Colors used:

  • Chartreuse green
  • Moss green
  • Black Green
  • Antique Green Dark
  • Soft Rose
  • Warm Gray

You can use any size tile you prefer.

First print the word “Welcome” on your printer using a suitable font and pitch. Then trace the outline of the letters onto your tile. You can then choose to either dust and fire, or you may ground (wet or dry) the letters or you may simply paint the letters.

Once the lettering has been applied you may start the placement of your roses. Keep in mind some basic rules: don’t place them directly across form each other and pay attention to your negative space.

Use Soft Rose to put your Roses in with, pull the petals out or make cuts. Paint the leaves using Chartreuse.

Fire to 015

For the second fire, shade your roses and remember to paint darker where one is lying under another. The bottom rose will have a shadow from the top rose.

Keep your highlights by wiping them back again. Paint around portions of the Rose and behind the leaves using Black Green to bring the roses forward.

Pull the Black Green down and begin to blend Antique Green Dark into the Black Green. Then pull out some shadow leaves. Paint the leaves with Moss Green and wipe back the highlights.

Fire to 015

For the third fire, now is the time to determine if your roses need more shading. If the Black Green needs to be made darker then do that now. Use Antique Green Dark to shade the leave.

Wipe highlights from the leaves and be sure the veins are the way you want them.

Using Pen Oil and Warm Gray, put in some scroll work to bring balance and continuity where needed.
