SNOWFLAKE PLATE with LUSTER by Marci Blattenberger TTTTTTTTT |
This piece is done in basically the same way as the Snowflake plate in lesson 1...with the exception that I used luster instead of chinapaint. Review the directions in lesson one concerning the placement of the snowflakes etc. Then , once the stickers are in place, paint on your luster. I used a Q-tip ( cotton bud) with some of the cotton removed so it doesnt soak up too much luster. Then I quickly apply the luster thinly. Make sure that the luster is thin. If it is thick in any spots, it will burn away , leaving an ugly ash... I used a turquoise blue luster on this piece. Once I had applied the luster over the entire rim, I LIGHTLY sprinkled the luster with common table salt. DONT OVERDO this. You have to work quickly because the salt will not work if the luster is dry. The salt will pull the luster to itself, leaving a small spot on the china. |
Each luster will react in a slightly different way with the salt. This particular turquoise blue luster fires with small spots with a faint pink undertone where the salt was...Other lusters will just leave the white spots..You have to test your particular luster. The salt gives the luster a dainty look and looks like fine snow in the background...but be careful to not sprinkle too much salt.Too much will pull the luster away in large white areas instead of small dots and it is impossible to correct that.. On the left is a closeup of the snowflakes and the salt effect. Follow firing directions on the other snowflake plate. |
