A SILHOUETTE IDEA FOR CHRISTMAS

This was our Christmas card design when the Silhouette Book came out. We do send them again every few years. Our 4th child, Julie, was expecting their lst child when I got the idea for these silhouettes.
Some don't see the bearded Joseph behind Mary & Jesus within the dark diagonal at the top of the page, but the whole Family is there.
You may use my design, shrink it to whatever size you desire, I'll consider it a greeting to you all from me.
Some artists have told me they have put this Family on plates/plaques/tiles. While I haven't painted this particular one, I have painted & fired silhouettes on a variety of surfaces.

READ ALL THIS FIRST.

The method I have worked out is to put BLACK on in thin layers so it looks like gray for each firing. You will be building up to BLACK but if you do it my way you should not have any chipping. I like Willoughby's OUTLINING BLACK best, but try whatever BLACK PAINT you have on hand. Just remember to use it in thin layers.

Silhouettes can be grounded, if you wish to do them in ONE FIRE. Detailed directions for this procedure are in the book. (The information on "how to" create your own greeting card is in my silhouette book "supplement" , "FACES 'n FEELINGS", along with a variety of other ways to use them. ).

Whether you sketch your own silhouette or trace one, it is important to ELIMINATE ALL DETAIL FOR THE lst FIRE. JUST USE THE BARE OUTLINE. NO STRA Y HAIRS, NO EYELASHES, NOTHING BUT THE "SKIN SHAPE" & THE "SOLID HAIR SHAPE" & adding any of the SOLID clothing on the bust.

With a pen. OUTLINE your silhouette. (I have a method for making "pen paint" that's simple & easy & it works great, in the book), but use whatever works for you. Then with a BRUSH carefully pull that outline into the head so you won't have a raised line anywhere. Complete this task, THEN fill in with the "BLACK PEN MIX" only it will look GRA Y . NOT BLACK.
By the way, you can use any color, I mention BLACK because it's what we usually think of for silhouettes. One "silhouettist" wrote me to say she used several different colors creating various ones of hers & they were gorgeous

WHEN "PENNING IT" STAY "INSIDE" YOUR SKETCH/TRACING LINES. JUST LIKE ANYTHING IN A PAINTING, THEY CAN GROW. The end result will be alarming, especially if you are doing a specific person of a specific age as they can "age" right before your very eyes. Resulting in an agonized "arrrrgah" or some such groan. (My supplement has an easy method of "how to" make your own personal ones that will look like the specific person you want).

FIRE THIS THIN LAYER OF "BLACK THAT LOOKS GRAY BECAUSE YOU'VE APPLIED IT LIGHTLY "PAINTING .THIS IS YOUR lst FIRE. Try to pull your strokes in one direction .Be sure there is NO BUILDUP of paint or ridges of paint thickly applied anywhere on any firing you do on these. Check this by looking ACROSS your piece.

2nd FIRE:

ADD ANOTHER "THIN LAYER OF BLACK THAT LOOKS GRAY'. Pull these strokes all in another direction. JUST DON'T RUSH THIS PROCESS NOW OR YOU MAYBE SOOOOORRRRY. . EASY & FAST .

3rd FIRE;

here's where it gets exciting. NOW YOU CAN ADD EYELASHES, STRAY HAIRS, THEN ADD THAT INEVITABLE THIN BLACK LAYER THAT LOOKS GRAY AGAIN, pulling in yet another direction. Do this each time.

NOW, all that's left is to add those quick thin layers of, you've guessed it, BLACK that appears to be a GRAY until it does become the very "BLACK LOOK" you're after. It sounds like a lot of work, but after the initial layer of the Ist fire & then 3rd fire detailing, it takes about 2 or 3 minutes to apply it to a small to medium sized piece for each layer.

For JOSEPH, reverse the procedure & pull the "penned outline" AWAY FROM THE SILHOUETTE INTO THE BACKGROUND, SO HE CAN REMAIN WHITE.

THE WHITE on the row of building roofs was added AFTER THE SILHOUETTE WAS TOTALLY BLACK .I used just WHITE CHINA PAINT, NOT ENAMEL. I never use enamels. The white paint works so well for me & is easier. FIRE it.

It took me longer to write this than it will for you to apply the thin layers. I fire them anywhere from 018 to 016. I hope you try silhouettes, it's different, fun, easy, really fast.

One student is doing several of these, & every so often she'll giggle, she is so tickled with her results. She was planning to give them to her children (these are of the grandchildren), but now she's decided to keep them & leave them to the kids in her will. . . She really is enjoying this, & she's not been painting for very long.
