These flowers begin blooming around October each year and often stay until after January.  Many varieties on the island of Hawaii have double and even triple layers of petals. They grow abundantly along Highway 11, especially where it goes through Captain Cook, Kealekakua, Kainalui and the other small towns in the South Kona District. They flood the roadside with a riot of brilliant reds
